Cat chocolate toxicity calculator

Cats cannot taste sweetness the way people do, yet they still steal chocolate from wrappers, countertops, and holiday trays.

The danger is not sugar: it is theobromine, a methylxanthine that cats metabolize slowly. This cat chocolate toxicity calculator converts chocolate type, grams eaten, and body weight in kilograms into an ingested theobromine dose in milligrams per kilogram and maps that dose onto a published educational severity band. Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, baking chocolate, and cocoa powder carry very different theobromine concentrations, so the same square of chocolate can be negligible for one cat and severe for another. The engine is pure arithmetic: no network, no sampling, and no clock. Use it as a first-pass educational estimate, then call a veterinarian if a cat actually ingested chocolate.

How to use it

Enter your values in the form above. The tool checks them before calculating and shows the result on the same page.

Check your inputs

Use the labels and units shown next to each field. If something is missing or outside the allowed range, the page points to the field to fix.

Use it again or automate it

Use the browser tool for individual checks and the API when you need the same capability in an automated workflow.

Get an answer now

Enter one set of values and see the result without building a spreadsheet or script.

Compare scenarios

Change one value at a time and rerun the calculation to understand what affects the result.

Automate repeated work

Use the API when the same calculation needs to run inside your product or workflow.

How is cat chocolate toxicity calculated?

Multiply grams eaten by the educational theobromine concentration of the chocolate type (mg per gram), then divide by body weight in kilograms. The result is dose_mg_per_kg, which is mapped onto negligible, mild, moderate, severe, or critical.

Which chocolate types and concentrations does the calculator use?

white 0.01, milk 2.0, dark 5.5, semisweet 5.7, baking 16.0, and cocoa_powder 26.0 milligrams of theobromine per gram. These are fixed educational table values, not brand assays.

What do the toxicity levels mean?

Negligible is below 20 mg/kg. Mild is 20 to under 40, moderate 40 to under 60, severe 60 to under 100, and critical is 100 mg/kg or more. The bands are educational first-aid ranges, not a diagnosis.

What happens if amount or weight is zero or negative?

The task fails with invalid_input. Amount in grams and weight in kilograms must both be strictly positive finite numbers. Zero, negative, NaN, and non-numeric values are rejected and are not billed.

What does the cat chocolate toxicity calculator cost?

The browser tool is free. API requests use prepaid KIT balance at $0.002 per successful call; invalid input is not billed.

Everything on this page is available programmatically. This section is for teams who want to wire it into their own systems; everyone else can just use the tool above.

Prefer to automate it? One authenticated POST creates the task; the result comes back by webhook or a signed link. The same capability also runs here on the web, by email and from Telegram — and soon from our app too.

curl -X POST https://api.kit.forhosting.com/bio/cat-chocolate-toxicity \

The API is asynchronous: the call returns a task_id immediately and the result arrives by webhook. Polling is capped at 1 req/s per task.
