This Australian income tax calculator accepts annual taxable income in Australian dollars, applies the Australian Taxation Office resident individual rates for the 2026-27 income year, and returns tax payable together with the effective rate as a percent of that income. Negative income is rejected with invalid_input instead of inventing a refund or a negative bill. The same pure parse module powers the free browser widget and the API path, so a household worksheet and an automation never disagree on a bracket edge. Medicare levy, the low income tax offset, and other credits are out of scope so the published ATO table stays comparable to the numbers you see here.

How is Australian income tax calculated?
The calculator applies ATO resident individual brackets for 2026-27: nil to $18,200, 15% to $45,000, 30% to $135,000, 37% to $190,000, and 45% above. tax_payable is the progressive sum; effective_rate is 100 times tax payable divided by taxable income.
What happens if taxable income is negative?
The task fails with invalid_input. Annual taxable income must be a finite number greater than or equal to zero. A negative amount is not billed.
Does this include the Medicare levy or tax offsets?
No. The ATO bracket table here excludes the Medicare levy of 2%, the Medicare levy surcharge, the low income tax offset, HELP/HECS repayment, and other credits. It is not tax advice.
Which income year and rates are used?
Resident individual rates for the 2026-27 income year (year ended 30 June 2027), including the reduction of the former 16% rung to 15% from 1 July 2026. Foreign-resident tables are out of scope.
What does the Australian income tax calculator cost?
