A letter or parcel only leaves the counter when the postage due is covered by stamps of a known denomination.

This postage stamps needed calculator accepts the postage due and the face value of one stamp, then returns the smallest whole number of stamps that meets or exceeds that postage, the total face value you will actually affix, and the overpay left above the due amount. Optional already-affixed stamps subtract from the remaining due so you can finish an envelope that already carries one Forever stamp or a leftover commemorative. The same pure function powers the free browser widget and the API, so a checkout helper and a warehouse label check never disagree on a ceiling division. Amounts are treated as currency units rounded to two decimal places; stamp counts stay integers. A successful call is billed at the published $0.002; invalid input is not charged.

The API is asynchronous: the call returns a task_id immediately and the result arrives by webhook. Polling is capped at 1 req/s per task.

Pricing

Per request$0.002

Published price — no tokens, no invented credits. A failed task is never charged.

Errors

`404`	`unknown_type`	That task type doesn't exist.
`429`	`rate_limited`	Too many requests. Use the webhook instead of polling.
